BPMN or Business Process Model and Notation is becoming a standard in both graphically depicting and modeling business processes for the purpose of automation. Below important are some key resources to assist you in this topic area.

A word of caution and a key thing to consider when modeling using BPMN: There have been several versions of the standard and while the latest version of the standard, (2.0) is supported by many process mapping and modeling tools, many of the full BPMS execution engines do not, and cannot execute all elements of BPMN 2.0 models nor can they import/export them. So, if your utlimate intended use of the model is for execution by a BPMS automation tool, you may wish to consider using an earlier version of the standard or verify your target BPMS vendor can support 2.0.
